Day 91 - Top o’ the morning! / by Edward Crim

It was in the Kennedy Forest today that I spied the tufted titmouse and the downy woodpecker. It was also there that I spied Moses’ rock, with the water bubbling up out of it, just as in days of old. And the furry fungus, the worm script, the flat grass and the message to Pop, carved in a vandalous fashion into the handrail of one of the boardwalks through the woods.

It is those same woods that are waiting patiently for summer to revive them, as they have been aggressively thinned by the powers-that-be in America’s premier urban park. In their quest to eliminate invasive species (not a bad thing to eliminate), the Keepers of the Woods have left almost no ground cover whatever, and, thanks to the recent rains, mud abounds. Briars also abound. I discovered this last fact by getting entangled in several different parts of the forest (as well as several of my own parts). Unlike Brer Rabbit, I really don’t care for the briar patch.

I went to the woods because I wished to photograph deliberately, and returned relatively unscathed (but for the small rip in my coat).
